Quicksilver's Game Face

by Laura Kalinowski, Associate Producer

There’s a reason Quicksilver recommends gaming strategies for our clients – we know how well it works for us in our personal lives! Games bring people together; inspire leadership, activism and competition; and - as Mary Poppins taught us – enlighten even the most mundane of chores. Read on to learn how your production partners game in their everyday lives – from hockey to chess to Nick Jr. to remote control airplanes – the game is on!

Sitting in an edit suite for hours on end can be a challenge, so sometimes you need a release. That release is sports – hockey in particular. I play in leagues whenever I can and have been a faithful Blackhawks fan since I was young.

The oval-ball game they play in heaven is actually… rugby football! My playing days ended a long time ago, but the thrill of winning in the company of my team mates is something I’ve never forgotten, and one reason why I’m a passionate fan of the game. These days I watch Tri-Nations matches beamed to my PC from New Zealand (world rank #1), South Africa (ranked #2), and Australia (ranked #3) – amazing spectacles. And 2011 brings around another Rugby World Cup – in New Zealand, where I learned the game.

I have always been a fan of the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears, but not the White Sox. That’s just how I was raised and I like to think I’m pretty smart, because I root for the ultimate underdogs. I just hope that I can see a World Series or Super Bowl win in my lifetime…that’s what keeps me going.

I’ve been known to enjoy the bluffing game “Balderdash.” It’s always an entertaining occasion to see your friends’ “curtituous” creativity at work and play, and have a few laughs along the way.

While following one favorite team paid off handsomely in the penultimate 2005 season for my Chicago White Sox, they have always been a favorite of mine (over the “other” Chicago team) due to the fact that they, as an organization, seem to posses the attributes I have always respected; they win and lose as a team, prefer substance over glamour, don’t give excuses and don’t give up. Now, if we can get the “other” organizations to follow these rules…

As the oldest of five (the other four being boys), I was raised as my father’s fifth son. I played baseball from the time I was small. As I got older, the bats got larger and the balls got smaller. As a child, I averaged 30 games a season at the old Sportsman’s Park in St. Louis where we sat in Section U with the umpires with whom my dad officiated high school and college games and cheered on the St. Louis Cardinals. I played softball as a kid, basketball through high school and tennis in college and played in the goal as an adult on an indoor soccer team. I coached swimming as a teen and soccer and basketball as a mom. I drove all over northern Illinois with my daughter’s basketball, cheerleading and volleyball teams and look forward to being huddled under a blanket on the sidelines as my grandchildren launch their sporting careers. There is no better way to connect with people than around a shared love of sports.

Since most of my free time is devoted to my two young boys, most of my gaming is done with them! This could be anything from our United States board game, to the giant pirate puzzle, to NickJr.com (a great web site with hundreds of games for preschoolers), to a game of catch in the back yard, to any number of clever games they play on my iPhone. Lately though, my greatest gaming enjoyment has come from my four-year-old making up his own games, sometimes with very elaborate rules that he quite possibly is making up as he goes along!

I like to game by watching sports with my husband in the evening. Besides the entertainment, there is so much to learn about individual players (of which my husband seems to know every detail) and how a team works (or doesn’t). It often reminds what an important role the coach plays.

My horse Glory and I love to compete in local horse shows. This white ribbon is for 3rd place in a show jumping event. Next time, we are going for Blue!

This summer I’ve been riding to work, to the lake, to parties, to street festivals - you name it. Chicago’s a great town for biking because there are bike lanes everywhere and you never have to take the same route twice. It’s cost-effective, good for the environment, and—most importantly—good for my midsection, which needs to be kept in check after frequent summer BBQs.

I enjoy competing in running events. While I will never win, I enjoy the challenge of competing against my previous times and trying to improve upon them. The accomplishment of getting a PR (personal record) is a great feeling.

My family has had Packer season tickets since I was young. I go to at least one game every year with my dad – it’s become an annual tradition. He managed to turn a little girl who knew very little about the sport into a diehard member of the G-Force!

I love to play chess with my son even though he’s still learning. The strategy involved constantly keeps you on your toes! Despite the intensity, we find it fun and relaxing.

I’ve always been interested in aviation. I own two RC flying contraptions. Frankenplane is a Cessna model airplane that I enjoy flying and crashing at low altitudes. I don’t really enjoy the crashing part, and I must learn to fly higher to avoid that. Its name comes from constantly putting it back together with spit and tape to keep it airworthy. This concept is also true in live event production, as we are often asked to find solutions in the moment.

My favorite sport is soccer - a competitive sport game warrants teamwork if you want to succeed. Soccer is my way to get away from the everyday works and hassles of life. Soccer is the most exciting sport because its action is non-stop, and it requires a lot of skill to play well.
